Buying energy in Japan

Afternoon Workshop

Buying energy in Japan

  • Daniel Shulman, CEO at Shulman Advisor

Japan has had a deregulated energy market since 2016. Nevertheless, an overwhelming majority of clients keep buying their energy from incumbent suppliers at tariffs. Price increases in 2021 – 2022 have activated the search by large buyers for more advanced methods of buying energy.

There’s an influx of new suppliers (including foreign market entrants), wholesale market volumes are starting to pick up, and suppliers are starting to diversify the types of contracts they offer. Japan has pledged carbon neutrality by 2050, but despite its involvement in the development of solar and battery technology, the energy transition is slow.

With more and more large corporations pushing the energy transition, will we see a faster development? How does the Japanese regulatory landscape work? What are the main peculiarities to be taken into account when buying energy in Japan?

Join this workshop to find out how you can buy energy in this challenging market.
